At 10 p.m., Maria Rodríguez slumps at the kitchen table, laboring through her algebra assignment. She doesn't understand the quadratic formulas. Her tutor isn't available until the next day. Her father has two jobs and lacks the mathematical knowledge required to help her. In a classroom of 32, it's impossible for her teacher to find time to plug Maria's learning gap in knowledge. Maria's story is not unusual – one of many reflecting the problem that has dogged education for decades. Over decades of educational reform, this one-to-many method continues to dominate classrooms. One teacher stands before a roomful of children, each from a different home environment, at different speeds of comprehension, and learning through different styles. Some pick up the lesson quickly; others need to hear it more than once. Some learn visually; others learn through practice. Teachers themselves work under immense pressure: lesson preparation, grading assignments, disciplining behavioral problems, parent communication, and somehow giving personalized attention to each student. Every year, the gap between good education and the classroom becomes wider and wider. The resource imbalance between districts further exacerbates these problems. Wealthy areas hire specialists and tutors; poorer areas lack even basic classroom materials. Poorer areas lack resources for specialized courses altogether. Foreign language learners need assistance that overworked teachers cannot provide. Learners with disabilities require accommodations that are difficult to make in a regular class setting. Generative AI is finally coming along to address these age-old issues in a way that wouldn't have been thought of before. Generative AI can simultaneously engage with each learner in the class and give personalized feedback. Generative AI's adaptive learning programs constantly adjust their content level to match the needs of individual learners. Intelligent assessments can help teachers pinpoint learning gaps before students get too far behind. This chapter discusses generative AI's impact on three core areas of learning. These include personalized learning, creation of engaging content, and assessment practices. These technologies can amplify teachers' efforts while doing things at scale that cannot possibly be done manually.
