Common Design Risks and Failure Modes in Serverless Distributed Systems

Distributed systems do not usually fail because one technology is missing. More often, they fail because sensible tools are applied in the wrong way or because small design shortcuts accumulate into larger architectural weaknesses over time. Durable orchestrations become bloated. Eventual consistency is ignored. Retries are treated as a universal fix. Costs are assumed to take care of themselves. Security, governance, and compliance are deferred until later. Telemetry grows into noise. Teams rebuild capabilities the platform already provides. In each case, the failure does not begin as a dramatic mistake. It begins as a design choice that looks reasonable in isolation but becomes risky as the system grows.
