Chapter 14 ended on refusal as the boundary around dignity. A society that can refuse can remain itself. A society that cannot refuse will be optimized into something else. That argument was directional. It told you what to keep doing. This chapter asks the question underneath that argument, and it is the question the whole book has been moving toward from the first page. What is it that you are keeping when you refuse? What is the thing inside you that is not a profile, not a credential, not a behavioral pattern, not anything a system could simulate or scale or hand to someone else? What is the irreducible part?
