Power Modeling – A Walkthrough

So far in the book, we have focused on performance as the singular goal in evaluating the effects of the architectural changes through simulation experiments. We have largely ignored power and energy, which are important aspects with their own modeling disciplines. While detailed treatment and experimental demonstration are outside the scope of the book, this chapter aims to introduce the basics and provide a starting point if you decide to research it further. To that end, the chapter offers a basic walkthrough of the power analysis tools available for use with the performance simulators we used earlier. The guidance offered is at a high level, and you are encouraged to consult the respective tools’ documentation for more information. You are not expected to run the experiments straight by copying the example code snippets.
