There was a period in my work life when speed was the most important thing. We constantly discussed numbers related to our progress and the amount of work we completed during each cycle. If those numbers increased, we felt like we were successful. If they decreased, we felt pressure or concern. This emphasis on speed became a measure of our accomplishments, a symbol of our success, and the narrative we conveyed to our supervisors and ourselves.
