Programs can become inefficient when too many changes are made directly to the top-level system specification. Often, these updates should instead be directed to the relevant subsystem specifications. Transitioning from the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) to the System Modeling Language (SysML) helps prevent overspecification at the system level and encourages more focused development of subsystems. When using a modeling tool, this process can be semi-automated, making use of the SysML element types Structured Activity and Action Calls. By building the model using structured activities and action calls, the supporting activities and actions can be linked. Using this linkage approach, the relationship and layering of activities and their associated requirements will remain connected. This provides a built-in traceability between the highest-level requirements and the detailed requirements, capabilities.
