In 2006, Clive Humby, a British mathematician and entrepreneur in the field of data science, coined the phrase “Data is the new oil” because of its incredible high value. While both are valuable in their raw state, they must first be processed in order to create something of value. Crude oil is sent to refineries where it is separated into petroleum products like fuel, oils, asphalts, etc., which turn it into staples of everyday life. Data is refined by people, tools, and services into reports, data warehouses, machine learning models, etc., to extract its value. Take both data and oil and leave them in their raw form, and what you have is a wasted opportunity.
