Planning is like planting; you can’t expect growth if you never prepare the soil. That lesson came into full focus for me the days I took WebAIM training many years ago. The training taught me about web accessibility basics: how to follow laws like Section 508 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), how people with disabilities use websites, why semantic HTML is important, how to use JavaScript and CSS for accessibility, how to add captions to videos, how to test websites, and how to use screen readers. I learned both the technical skills and why this work matters for real people. At the time, as a lead UX designer I was trying to fix a broken process, so I created my own accessibility guidelines, patching holes in a system that was excluded by default. But the more I studied accessibility, the more I realized: exclusion isn’t natural. In nature, everything has a role.
