OpenTelemetry and commercial observability focus on application observability and only partially support infrastructure observability. Some APMs only support WASs (Web Application Servers) and specific databases. Even APMs that support E2E monitoring only support part of the application. I've personally thought about the need for alternatives many times, and this chapter describes many of the things I've thought about. I have implemented infrastructure observability using only open source.
