Introducing Space Types
摘要
In this chapter, we will begin by exploring the origins and history of MakerSpaces and describe early historical examples of physical spaces that served similar roles to the MakerSpaces of today. We will then follow up by exploring the common characteristics of several different types of MakerSpaces in greater detail. There are too many different MakerSpace types to attempt to describe in just this book so we have narrowed down the list to a selection based on our impression of the most common types of MakerSpaces that we are familiar with, classified by the setting of the space. The four key types of MakerSpaces that we have chosen to describe in depth in this chapter include Library MakerSpaces, School MakerSpaces (K-12 or primary and secondary schools), University and College MakerSpaces (or other higher education institutions), and Community MakerSpaces (inclusive of all other MakerSpace settings not described by the first three on the list). These categories of MakerSpace types represent the authors’ best attempt at segmenting the different types of MakerSpace physical settings that are most commonly seen.
