One significant aspect we want to cover in this book is to inform readers about the various options available when seeking alternatives to VMware. Given that Microsoft is a prominent leader in the industry, it is essential to include a discussion of Microsoft as a viable alternative. In this chapter, we will begin by analyzing Microsoft’s primary product for server virtualization, known as Hyper-V, and explore its historical development over time. Additionally, we will emphasize the critical components of Hyper-V's backend architecture. The latter part of this chapter will focus on the increasingly popular hybrid cloud strategy within the industry. We will introduce Azure Stack HCI (or Azure Local) as a distinctive product that integrates the Microsoft Azure portal and its associated features, serving as a unified management platform for infrastructure resources deployed within your own datacenter. Finally, we will present a comparison between VMware's offering in this area, known as VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), and Microsoft Azure Stack HCI.
