An Ambiguous Heterotopia
摘要
In his 1962 book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, science historian and philosopher Thomas Kuhn described a sort of ideological gulf that opens periodically in the scientific academy. The establishment and its institutions accrete around a central theme or problem and become experts in it. In time, some practitioners discover a new theme or problem that warrants their attention. This discovery marks a potential paradigm shift (a term coined in Kuhn's book). The techno-social revolution unfolding throughout the 2010s was no different than the ones that had come before. Existing institutions could either adapt to the new paradigm or be replaced. But procrastination was off the table.
