Figuring Out What’s Going on in the Data: Descriptive Statistics

A lot of people have heard the quote popularized by Mark Twain, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” Statistics isn’t really a well-loved field, and the term itself can have different meanings to different people and in different contexts—for most researchers and data professionals, it isn’t a bad word. But it certainly doesn’t help its reputation that the giants of modern statistics in the centuries leading up to World War II used it to drive the devastating pseudoscience eugenics.
