Overview of AI and ML

As seen in other industries, ML is widely used within cybersecurity, as evidenced by all the products touting ML and AI. The power of ML to analyze large amounts of data efficiently, accurately, and quickly ensures that the use of ML in cybersecurity will continue to expand rapidly. This chapter will provide a high-level understanding of ML for cybersecurity practitioners. It is not intended to teach the details of machine learning or to make the reader a data scientist. The goal is to help demystify ML so that security professionals can harness the great potential of ML within the cybersecurity domain. Also, with this understanding, security professionals will be better prepared to ensure that AI and ML systems are built and deployed safely and securely across all industries. This chapter is not designed to provide in-depth knowledge of ML or delve into the underlying mathematics. However, it might inspire cybersecurity professionals to explore ML further. After all, cybersecurity practitioners are extremely inquisitive.
