Jose, an avid runner, who frequently participates in Bangalore's events, needed a new pair of shoes. Like countless others, Jose turned to the web to research his next purchase. Statistics show a significant portion of buyers use online searches to decide on the products before visiting ecommerce platforms [1]. Knowing exactly what he wanted, Jose typed "Adidas Men Trainers Running Shoes" into the search bar of a popular Indian ecommerce platform, ready to begin his shopping journey. Figure 4-1 illustrates an example of a search bar on an ecommerce website. A similar search bar is also available on the mobile application for ecommerce platforms. Search functionality is a cornerstone of e-commerce platforms, delivering significantly higher conversion rates among buyers who use it. This chapter explores how search serves as a critical driver of engagement and sales, powered by an array of machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms. The author provides a detailed overview of the architecture of search engines, breaking down the roles of various components and explaining their importance through practical scenarios. The evolution of search algorithms is traced from traditional text matching to advanced neural embedding-based semantic search. In the era of generative AI, search on e-commerce platforms has undergone a profound transformation. Generative AI-enabled conversational search engines, such as those released by Flipkart and Amazon, have redefined how buyers interact with search, offering more intuitive and personalized experiences. This chapter highlights how these innovations are reshaping e-commerce search, making it smarter, more engaging, and highly effective in driving conversions.
