In this chapter, I will delve into the theoretical frameworks underpinning the concepts of metaverse, digital twin, city, smart cities, and smart city indicators. The metaverse is explored as a virtual 3D environment where users interact through avatars, mirroring the physical world for purposes like online gaming, virtual travel, ecommerce, and entertainment. The digital twin concept, introduced by Grieves, is defined as an integrated simulation of a physical system, constantly updated based on real-time data and historical footprints. The chapter will also provide insights into the evolving definition of cities and the increasing acceleration of urbanization, leading to the emergence of megacities with complex problems. Smart cities, leveraging emerging technologies like IoT, 5G, AI, robotics, and metaverse/digital twins, aim to address urbanization challenges. Additionally, smart city indicators are presented, offering a set of measures to evaluate the effectiveness of smart city functions, covering aspects such as environment, living standard, education, mobility, economy, and governance. The proposed theoretical framework sets the stage for the subsequent architectural design and digital twinning process discussions.
