Video Quality Assessment

In this chapter, the principles of video quality assessment (VQA) and its application on common streaming platforms are unraveled. The fundamental tenets and highlights of VQA are elaborated with regard to maintaining a seamless multimedia experience. The breakdown includes a deep dive into the different artifacts that the algorithm uses, such as ringing, blocking, and noising. With the technique used being a no-reference (NR) metric, a mean opinion score (MOS) is generated, which is interpreted as the quality of service (QoS) rating. This chapter focuses on the building blocks used to construct the VQA algorithm, as well as a review of current applications being used by telecommunications companies and operators. Additionally, an in-depth review of current VQA-based research is presented.
