Research on “Dragon Scales” Binding Art and Design

“Dragon scales” binding is an ancient form of binding in China, and this binding technique has not been passed down. Currently, only one physical object exists. In recent years, there have been some successful research and replication of “Dragon scales” binding works, but they have not received unified recognition from the academic community. This paper designs the basic structure and replication method of “Dragon scales” binding based on the two works of “Portraits of Confucius’ disciples” and “Painting of Confucius’ Sacred deeds” through literature research and reference to some replicas of “Dragon scales” binding. Image processing software is used to segment the images, digital printing technology is used to present the images on coated xuan paper, and the printed pages are collaged and mounted to obtain a complete “Dragon scales” binding work, elaborated on the technical issues that need to be paid attention to when designing and producing “Dragon scales” binding works through experiments,develop a path to replicate the ancient binding technique of “Dragon Scale” Binding.
