In 2005, Liu Chao-Shiuan(刘兆玄) delivered a speech entitled “Whose Century Is the Twenty-First Century?” at Tsinghua University. When discussing the viewpoint by the famous historian, Arnold Joseph Toynbee, who claimed that “the nineteenth century is the British century, the twentieth century will be the American century, and the twenty-first century will be the Chinese century”, he said: “We are certain that China will become or has been the world’s largest manufacturing center, consumer market, and will continue to grow.”
