Balantidiasis

Balantidiasis is caused by Balantidium coli. It is a common ciliated protozoan parasite of 50 mammalian hosts including swine, monkeys, great apes, and human. B. coli is cosmopolitan. Balantidiasis is common in the Philippines and occurs in Latin America, Bolivia, South Asia, New Guinea, Southeast Asia, the Western Pacific Islands, rural South America, or communities where close contact with domestic swine occurs.
