Henrique da Rocha Lima discovered this bacterium in 1916. He along with his friend Stanislaus von Prowazek was studying the cause of ‘jail fever’ in a prison in Hamburg, Germany, and got infected. Prowazek died in 1915. Rocha Lima named the causative agent after his deceased friend.
