Eulerian and Lagrangian descriptions of an entity are introduced. The state of strain is defined in terms of strain components, and their transformation relations, strain-displacement relations and compatibility conditions of strain are discussed. For a given state of stress: principal axes of stress, principal stresses, Mohr’s circles, maximum shear stress, hydrostatic and deviatoric stress components are covered.
