Hubble Space Telescope: Permanently Changing the Way We See the Universe

The Hubble Space Telescope, with its 2.4 m mirror, was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990 after decades of planning and setbacks. However, the first images were a major disappointment, revealing a crippling flaw in the mirror that produced blurry, out-of-focus photographs. This ‘myopia” was traced back to a tiny imperfection in the mirror’s edge, leading to public mockery and NASA backlash after the agency had spent billions on what seemed to be the largest piece of space junk ever. However, Hubble was saved by a series of high-risk Space Shuttle missions where astronauts outfitted the telescope with corrective optics and new instruments. Over 30 years later, Hubble has fundamentally changed astronomy, determining the age and expansion rate of the universe, quantifying elusive dark matter, finding supermassive black holes in most galaxies, and capturing stunning deep field images that unveiled thousands of distant galaxies in a tiny patch of sky. Despite tragedy and setbacks, Hubble's saga represents the pinnacle of human ingenuity and persistence to understand the cosmos. This aging telescope continues its lonely voyage, still gathering new knowledge as it orbits high above Earth's atmosphere.
