Chandra X-ray Observatory: Probing into a Violent Universe

摘要

The violent nature of our universe has long been speculated but not directly observed until the launch of NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory in 1999. Named after Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Chandra has revealed a cosmos rife with great collisions, explosions, and radiation. With sensitivity increased by orders of magnitude compared to previous X-ray telescopes, Chandra provided the first solid evidence for stellar black holes like Cygnus X-1. It discovered some of the heaviest stellar black holes, massive black hole mergers, and thousands of supermassive black holes through deep sky surveys. Chandra’s observations have elucidated the connection between star formation and the emergence of black holes and solved the mystery of the diffuse X-ray background radiation. Though our view is limited by the vast distances, phenomena like black hole mergers occur frequently in the universe, unleashing energies equivalent to millions of suns. Chandra has opened a new window into this violent universe, fundamentally transforming our understanding of black holes and the evolution of galaxies.
