The Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed the hidden, icy nature of the galaxy since its launch in 2003. Reaching temperatures as low as −268 °C, Spitzer chilled itself to detect faint infrared signals from distant stars and galaxies. This cold was essential, as the telescope’s own heat would have drowned out cosmic sources. Spitzer carried 350 L of liquid helium to maintain its frigid operating temperature.
