Stardust Comet Mission: Capturing Cometary Matter

The origin of our solar system holds enduring fascination. New evidence from the Stardust mission has shattered prior theories and models. We once thought the outer solar system was a peaceful, organized realm of ice and snow. Instead, Stardust discovered minerals that can only be combined at high temperatures, such as calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions in the Wild 2 comet, indicating turbulent mixing of materials early in the system’s history. The old view of comets as primordial dirty snowballs also proved faulty. They contain materials formed at divergent temperatures close to the Sun, then ejected outwards. Comets are more like construction debris than finished planets. Small worlds from the system’s edge thus unlock its beginnings. Our cosmic story is more dynamic than imagined. Humans pursue this quest for origins ceaselessly. New data summons new theories, as we seek to locate ourselves in time and space. Missions like Stardust reshape our solar system narrative profoundly. The next venture to extract secrets is China’s “Zheng He.” The mysteries persist, but exploration lights the way. We chip off pieces of the giant riddle, one asteroid sample at a time.
