The marvel of ALMA, one of the most advanced radio telescopes in history, welcomes humanity into an unprecedented era of cosmic comprehension. Upon the addition of its 66th antenna in 2013, ALMA’s insights revolutionized our understanding of the universe. Contrary to previous beliefs, it unveiled that stars had formed a billion years earlier than previously thought, implying an earlier emergence of planets as well. This groundbreaking discovery is further supported by ALMA’s detection of water 13 billion light-years away, reigniting speculations about the existence of extraterrestrial life. But perhaps its most profound contribution is the portrayal of black holes—mystical entities that challenge the very fabric of our understanding. In a groundbreaking mission, ALMA and seven global telescopes merged efforts, transforming Earth into one enormous observational tool, with their sights set on M87—a galaxy millions of light-years away. The result, achieved through a rigorous marathon of data analysis, unveiled the remarkable visual of a black hole. The “eye” of ALMA enables us to regain our pride in exploring the cosmos, as we embrace the vastness of space with a sense of awe and wonder.
