Polymer Materials for Defence & Aerospace Applications

This chapter gives an overview of the synthesis of different magnetic materials (including particles, fibres and rods) and their incorporation into PNCs (polymer nanocomposites) to obtain so-called MREs (magneto-rheological elastomers). Characterization of the structural and magnetic properties of these materials and evaluation of their magneto-rheological properties are discussed. MREs are ‘smart’ materials with numerous functional applications, examples of which are given towards the end of the chapter.
