A Framework of Augmented Design Process: Development of Footwear Concept Designs Using Artificial Intelligence

Footwear design process is a set of complex tasks primarily focusing on finding the most versatile specifications that can cover a broad spectrum of the user’s biomechanical (body), psychological (mind), and kinaesthetic requirements. The modern footwear industry is most interested in implementing new manufacturing technologies, particularly those involving additive manufacturing, 3D printing, robots, the Internet of Things, machine-to-machine communication, and 3D scanning and remote use. The footwear design is rapidly being recognized as a crucial strategic instrument for influencing consumer desire and underlying emotional values. Hence, an augmented concept design process involving human and machine intelligence has been proposed. In this chapter, the author proposes a five-step-augmented method of creating footwear concept design using Artificial Intelligence. The AI-generated footwear design concepts reflect a significant innovation in the domain of design. This process provides designers with tools and techniques to create customized and sustainable footwear with a much faster timeline.
