Introduction to Composite Materials

This introductory chapter initiates our exploration into the microstructural and micromechanical aspects of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites within the context of ballistic protection. It commences by providing a fundamental definition of composite materials. The chapter further categorizes composite materials and offers a comprehensive overview of commonly used FRP composites, encompassing Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP), Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), Aramid Fiber-Reinforced Polymer composites, and other notable variants. Additionally, it underscores the wide-ranging applications of these materials across various industries, emphasizing their significance in aerospace technology, underwater structures repair, marine vessel construction, automotive and railway sectors, urban development, and their indispensable contributions to defense applications, including air, water, and land megastructures.
