The Characteristics of Soft Clay for Ground Improvement Distributed at Patimban Port Development Area in Indonesia

In order to cope with an increasing demand for efficient transport for the Jakarta Metropolitan in Java Island, a new deep seaport was planned and built in Patimban village, Subang Regency, 100 km away from Jakarta. The complex volcanic history of this major island resulted in a very thick layer of very soft marine clay (about 20 m depth) in the coastal regions and nearby seabed. The unique characteristics of this very soft layer create immense challenges in soft soil treatment to the Project. This paper describes and reports on some findings on characteristics of this soft clay layer in the project area.
