摘要

In densely populated urban locations where space for construction is limited, there will be an increasing number of construction projects in other urban areas with high building density, leading to the phenomenon of overcrowding of new constructions next to existing long-standing structures. Hence, it is of critical importance to reduce the impact of excavation work on nearby structures. The utilization of the buttress wall—a traditional diaphragm wall combined with multiple counterforts to create a structure with greater stiffness—is among recent technological innovation in construction methods in Vietnam. This research analyzes an application of counterforts in buttress walls to reduce the displacement of deep excavations adjacent to the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien Metro tunnel. The goal of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of buttress walls in minimizing the total displacement of the soil and buildings adjacent to the excavation site. This study provides important insights about the implementation of buttress walls as an effective strategy to alleviate the adverse effects of deep excavations on nearby metro tunnel, which is very useful for future construction projects in urban areas. The findings of this study can be useful for engineers and designers involved in similar future deep excavation projects next to existing structures.
