Development of t–z and q–z Curves for Driven Piles and Bored Piles in Alluvial Clay Soil Based on Fiber Optic Instruments—A Case Study in Bekasi, Indonesia

The presented case was located in Bekasi, Indonesia. There are 2 different types of pile, a 600-mm-diameter driven pile with an 18.5-m effective length and an 800-mm-diameter bored pile with a 30.7-m effective length. The driven piles were constructed to support 19-storied buildings, with an allowable bearing capacity of 1750 kN, meanwhile, the bored piles were constructed to support 44-storied buildings, with an allowable bearing capacity of 3500 kN. Instrumented pile load tests for both piles were performed with fiber optic cable to measure axial strains of the piles during the load tests. Both piles were then tested to 250% of the design load. During the test of the driven pile, it was detected that at the maximum test load, the majority of the load was transferred to shaft friction, and a small portion of this load was transferred to the pile tip. In the case of the bored pile, all of the design load was transferred on shaft friction and the pile tip resistance has not been mobilized. t–z curves and q–z curves were developed based on the interpretation of that strain measurement during pile testing.
