Case Study: Dynamic Load Testing of a Jointed Concrete Pile Project in Malaysia

Dynamic load testing (DLT) of driven piles is a commonly used method for assessing the load-bearing capacity of piles in foundation design. The paper first reviews the current practice of dynamic load testing of deep foundations, including the types of equipment and methods used. It then followed by DLT data and results of 15-cm square concrete piles in a specific project site in Malaysia. The tests were conducted using two different systems: Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) and Goble Pile Check (GPC) using the same principle and following the same American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard D4945. The paper highlights critical observations on testing or monitoring splice-jointed concrete piles in general and a comparison between PDA and GPC systems on the case study piles.
