Mechanism of Large-Scale Landslide Development and Remedial Methods—A Case Study in Vietnam

This paper presents a case study of a landslide that occurred during the construction of a widening road section (ĐT112) located on a high mountain pass in Yen Bai province, Vietnam. The landslide was triggered by excavation activities, resulting in deformation of the roadbed, settlement cracking, and a large-scale landslide. Through case study and numerical modeling using finite element method (FEM), failure mechanism and critical failure surface are identified. Effective treatments such as slope reinforcement (soil nail, ground anchor, bored pile), drainage systems, and slope geometry optimization are combined and discussed, and protect the slope surface with anti-corrosion wire mesh. The findings offer practical guidance to engineers and geotechnical practitioners, facilitating safer design and management of cutting slopes.
