DFIG-Based Wind Energy Conversion System with BESS for Stable Operation of Medium Voltage Distribution System
摘要
Wind turbine with doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is most commercially used generator in wind farms. However, at times of grid disturbances, its performance deteriorates. In cases of grid faults, the rotor side converter (RSC) of the DFIG may be susceptible to damage due to excessive rotor currents. Furthermore, there is a risk of the DC link voltage exceeding permissible limits and protective system may shutdown the wind energy system. Additionally, the inherent uncertainty of wind patterns poses a challenge by causing fluctuations in the generator's power output. As a result, this article's primary objective is to evaluate the feasibility of a battery energy storage system (BESS) in serving as a reliable grid power source even when the wind power plant is not operational. To carry out this assessment, the BESS is integrated into the point where the wind turbine connects to the grid, and an analysis is conducted comparing grid voltages and currents with and without the presence of a DFIG. The research findings demonstrate that a BESS can effectively provide grid voltage, ensuring continuous power supply even when the wind power plant is offline. To evaluate these findings, simulations are executed in MATLAB/Simulink environment.
