Geriatric Elbow Fractures and Dislocations

摘要

Fractures around the elbow are common in the elderly population with low energy injury mechanisms. The most common being isolated olecranon fractures and radial head fractures, followed by distal humerus supracondylar and inter-condylar fractures. “Terrible Triad” proximal radioulnar fracture dislocations and Monteggia proximal ulna fracture dislocations are challenging injuries of the elbow region. Modern treatment of elbow fractures demand a thorough understanding of the anatomy and biomechanics of the elbow. Successful treatment strategies include non-operative treatment, plate internal fixation, ligamentous stabilization procedures, arthroplasty, and combination of these, or complementary procedures for complications. Importantly, all elbow fractures demand early rehabilitative training if favourable outcomes are to be expected. Partnership between the surgeon and the rehabilitation therapist should be encouraged with protocols and feedback mechanisms worked out.
