In The Scarlet Letter (1850), Nathaniel Hawthorne blurs the dichotomy between a passionate lover and a passionate hater to emphasize the longing between two lovers and, consequently, the strong aversion between them when love is unrequited. “[T]he same thing as bottom” is where I look to situate Dickinson’s attitude in engaging religious faith.
