Future Directions

This chapter outlines future research directions from three aspects, including vehicle–road–cloud integration, cyber-physical fusion, and generative AI empowered IoV. First of all, vehicle–road–cloud integration is envisioned as the future technological roadmap for realizing fully functional autonomous driving. Second, in line with the vision of metaverse, cyber-physical fusion in IoV is a promising paradigm with the goal of seamlessly merging virtual and physical environments, enhancing user experiences, and creating an immersive and interconnected world for future ITSs. Last but not least, the generative AI is changing the world in various ways, and it is certainly that intelligent and connected vehicles will be one of the most representative applications scenarios empowered by generative AI.
