Microbial Marvels: Transforming the Way We Diagnose

The microbial world is massive, diversified, and dynamic. Microbes comprise a broad category of microorganisms with a wide range of morphological and physiological variations, including bacteria, fungi, microalgae, viruses, and protozoa. The elevated death toll due to infectious diseases worldwide appeals to researchers to explore the microbial marvels. Unique metabolic variations of diverse microorganisms may be used for human welfare in a variety of ways, including the production of medicines, bioassays, diagnostics, bioremediation, sewage treatment, and biotechnology. Diagnostic microbiology is an ever-evolving discipline used for the identification and characterization of disease-causing pathogens. Since ancient times, we have used microorganisms to diagnose diseases. The invention of microscopy revolutionized this microbial world which led to the development of gram staining, serological testing, microbial culture, etc. New efficient modern techniques like NGS, MALDI-TOF, ELISA, PCR, CRISPR/Cas, and many more were developed by overcoming the limitations faced in previous detection methods. The development of modern techniques and characterization of complete microbial genomes will lead to better insights for selective, sensitive, and cost-efficient diagnostic methods in the future.
