Performance Evaluation of Seismic Resisting Potential of Geo-Composite Liner in Waste Containment Structures–Some Case Studies
摘要
The present study focuses on arresting the sub-surface migration of toxic leachate generated in waste containment structures due to the deposition of solid/liquid wastes in it. In this regard, the novel geo-synthetic-laterite soil composite material was tested to examine its efficacy in being used as a primary liner in waste containment structures. The engineering properties of the geo-synthetic and soil materials were evaluated based on the guidelines specified in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The contaminant adsorption capacities of the composite material were examined by conducting laboratory scale column tests. The solute transport numerical model was tested with the experimental results to investigate the model’s validity to the test data. The thickness of the composite liner was determined based on numerical modeling with the solute transport model considering the design life of the containment structures. The static and seismic stability of the side slopes of the dykes were evaluated using numerical models. The optimal liner thickness and optimum height of dykes were evaluated with a focus on the enhancement of capacities of dykes to accommodate the increased volume of wastes. The study would help to develop any futuristic landfill system for the disposal of waste containing toxic pollutants.
