Application of Runge Kutta Method for Performing the Time Domain Simulation on Single Machine Infinite Bus System with Automatic Voltage Regulator

This paper presents the use of Runge Kutta fourth order (RK4) method to find the numerical solution for a set of differential equations and algebraic equations that are encountered in power system stability problem. Single Machine Infinite Bus System (SMIB) has a set of differential equations together with an algebraic equation. Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is accompanied by a differential equation. By considering an example of SMIB, seven scenarios of disturbances were given and the plots of all the state variables and few non-state variables were sketched to see whether positive damping or negative damping was offered to the oscillations that arouse due to the disturbance with the help of RK4 method of suitable step size coded using MATLAB software.
