On Various Model Predictive Control Strategies for PMSMs Drives

This paper presents a review on variety of Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm structures for PMSMs drives. MPC algorithms with different cost functions, PWM modulators like constant or variable switching frequencies are discussed. Also, MPC algorithms to cope with the time delay between measurement and actuation are considered. These algorithms are compared for the dynamic performance of the drive. In steady-state performance, characteristics like inverter losses, current distortion, and torque ripple are studied. The second part of the paper presents MPC current controllers combined with Sliding Mode Control (SMC). It is concluded that MPC offers ripple-free operation in steady state. Additionally, speed loop employs SMC in order to achieve the robust operation of mechanical loop.
