Critical Success Factors for Make in India Implementation in Defence Sector: A TISM Modeling Approach

This chapter seeks to examine and identify certain Critical Success FactorsCritical Success Factor (CSFs) that will have an influence on the application of the “Make in IndiaMake in India” concept in the Indian defence industryIndian Defence Industry. Further, the relationship between these CSFs is established by defining their hierarchical relationship. The identified CSFs are utilized to create a framework of factors which indicates the hierarchical relationship developed through the use of TISMTotal Interpretive Structural Modelling (TISM). To determine the driving power but also to pinpoint the CSFs for dependence power, MICMACCross impact matrix multiplication applied to classification analysis (MICMAC) analysis was employed. A two-layered approach is used to identify the CSFs, combining a literature reviewLiterature review with the opinions of experts in the field. The TISM-created hierarchical architecture highlights the interdependencies between the CSFs. According to the research, there are three sorts of factors that affect CSFs: linkage factors, dependent factors, and independent factors. The linkage factors connect the two sets of factors, whereas the independent factors have a strong driving power and the dependent factors have a high dependence power. The research has repercussions for the decision-makers and policymakers in the top echelon of Ministry of Defence, who decide on different policies and their implementation. The paper brings out the importance of each CSF and how each factor can influence the implementation of Make in IndiaMake in India in defence sector. The CSFs so derived in the paper assist in the incorporation of Make in India in defence sector. This study clearly brings out the factors and is of prime importance for the decision-makers in the field of Make in IndiaMake in India.
