The Effect of English Vocabulary Memorization Applications (App) on College Students’ English Learning

The popularization of mobile terminals and extensive coverage of the network have benefited college students a lot in their English learning. They are provided with more choices in learning methods with the vigorous development of online English learning apps. A case in point is their vocabulary Learning. English vocabulary is an essential part or language learning, and college students often face the challenge of memorizing and recalling numerous words. The access to English vocabulary memorization applications (App) like Bai Ci Zhan, Shanbay-Words, MaiMemo and so on has helped students expand their vocabulary. However, there are few studies on the comparative analysis between the learning methods of memorizing words through traditional paper-based wordbooks and apps. This study, therefore, will start from the comparison between these two methods based on the analysis of a questionnaire distributed online to students at NingboTech University, and then explore the effect of word memorization apps on their English learning from the collected data analysis. The research results show that compared with traditional method of memorizing words through paper-based wordbooks, most respondents tend to use apps to promote English learning due to their unique functions and brilliant user experience. Furthermore, apps can enhance their determination and motivate their enthusiasm in English learning. This research also points out some disadvantages of the apps and provides the suggestions to promote the development of such apps.
