Pressure Pulse Wave Model for Continuous Arterial Blood Pressure Approximation

Blood pressure (BP) is a crucial indicator of cardiovascular status. In arterial cannulation, a catheter inserted into a patient’s blood vessels poses potential risks and inconveniences. Presently existing cuff based technique provide only short data without continuous BP information in an unobtrusive manner. Non-invasive type continuous BP measurements of patient is still a challenging task. The aim of this study is to use pressure pulse wave modeling to approximate continuous blood pressure. Pressure pulse wave (PPW) signal are collected from radial arteries is used for measurement. In order to estimate the systolic BP and diastolic BP values, the estimation technique adds the starting blood pressure values derived from a regression model and the pressure changes measured from the PPW. The PPW signals and its first derivative signal were used to derive eleven beneficial parameters. For estimation of initial BP, Multi-variable linear regression model using above features was constructed. The proposed regression model in estimating initial BP and the error of systolic BP is 1.33 mm of Hg and of diastolic BP is 1.14 mm of Hg respectively. The results from the proposed model indicated that PPW model has great potential for continuous blood pressure estimation, and can be used for round the clock blood pressure measurement of critical care patients.
