The Systems Biology Consortium for Infectious Diseases presents a novel approach to understanding and combating infectious diseases by integrating the principles and techniques of systems biology. Systems biology is an approach that studies biological systems as a whole and their interactions with the environment, using experimental and computational methods to generate and analyze multi-omics data. The chapter explains the definition, classification, and global impact of infectious diseases, which are caused by various pathogens and pose significant threats to human health. It also discusses the challenges in diagnosing, treating, and preventing infectious diseases, such as complexity, heterogeneity, variability, and drug resistance. The chapter shows how systems biology can help identify biomarkers and drug targets, predict disease outcomes and responses, and accelerate drug development and repurposing.
