Re-imagining Migration and Security

Migration has traditionally been seen as a threat to security and stability and is thus opposed to the concept of security. However, this dichotomous view is increasingly being challenged and it is becoming clear that migration and security are interlinked and require a more nuanced and integrated approach. A new understanding of migration and security requires a shift from a narrow focus on border controls and security to a more comprehensive approach that takes into account the complex drivers and impacts of migration, as well as the ways in which migration and security are linked to other global challenges such as climate change, economic inequality and conflict. This requires a comprehensive understanding of how migration can both contribute to and detract from security. For example, migration can be a cause of instability and conflict, but it can also promote social and economic development and strengthen global cooperation and resilience. By looking at migration and security in a more holistic and integrated way, we can identify and address the root causes of migration and promote more sustainable and equitable migration management strategies.
