Energy and Climate Change

This chapter provides an overview on the global energy sector, interlinking energy with climate change. This includes energy consumption, share of renewable energy and the climate policy instruments along with the statistics of key countries. The second section explains energy sector in India, in terms of energy resources as well as the major consumer segments. In the third section, policies and regulations pertaining to the Indian power sector have been elucidated, along with the statistics in terms of the installed capacity as well as the power mix. The last section narrates the rationale for India to harness renewables, the work undertaken, besides providing information in terms of installed power capacity, grid share and the investments made in the sector.
