Modern Landslide Activity and Slope Stability Analysis on the Site “Oreanda” (Southern Slope of the Crimean Mountains)

The southern slope of the Crimean Mountains is a narrow coastal line of the Black Sea. Favorable landscape and climatic conditions contributed to its intensive long-term development. Currently significant number of objects in the region belong to the objects of cultural heritage—the recreational complex «Nijnya Oreanda», including Livadiya Park Ensemble c Livadiya Palace. At the same time, the Southern slope of the Crimean Mountains is one of the regions of intensive landslides activity. The landslide site “Oreanda”, located within the Western Livadiya landslide system and which is directly adjacent to the Livadiya Park Ensemble, is considered. Landslide activity on the Oreanda site, which is secondary within the larger landslide system, has been recorded since 1962. The length of the landslide was more than 200 m. The volume of rocks involved in the displacements was estimated at more than 110 thousand m3. Since the mid-80 s of the twentieth century, the landslide on the Oreanda site has been stable. The current stage of landslide activity began in 2007. Complex engineering geological investigations were performed on the site. The obtained results was the basis of the performed slope stability assessment. The analysis of slope stability on the site Oreanda showed that the depth of the landslide deformations capture can reach 40 m, which requires a revision of the existing landslide hazard assessment.
